Divorce, Affairs, and Immorality Oh My

Between the Ashley Madison List, the sad news about Josh Douggar, and the equally tragic news of Pastor Tullian Tchividjian’s adultery and divorce from his wife, I am so saddened by the state of marriage in our nation and in the church.

It would serve us well to read and even commit to memory Proverbs 5, penned nearly 3,000 years ago (this is an old problem).  A few snippets of truth from Prov 5…the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil, but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword,” “Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house…[lest you find yourself] at the brink of utter ruin,” and “rejoice in the wife of your youth…Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love (yep, that’s in the Bible!).

1 Corinthians 10:12-13 says, “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

1 Corinthians 10, gives us cause for concern and comfort.  It is a passage that I have committed to memory and have used it as a weapon in my arsenal against the enemies attacks…you should add it to your weaponry if you have not already.  Memorize it, meditate on it, and use it to guide your prayers when temptation comes.  First, remember that no matter how strong or mature you think you are, you are not immune from temptation. I know as a pastor that this is one of Satan’s favorite tactics to destroy ministries.  Second, temptations are a universal human problem so stop thinking you are alone or weird or weak; that is a lie from the enemy to back you into a corner and make you vulnerable.  So don’t feel isolated and alone…you are in good company.  Next, remember again and again that when the temptations come, and they will, God has provided a way of escape.  Look for it and take it!    Don’t be proud in your strength, silent in your struggle, or ignorant of the help of the Lord.  On my computer, tablet, and phone, I have installed Covenant Eyes software and I have invited people into my life to help hold me accountable. You need this too, men especially.

Followers of Jesus are called to walk in holiness and to not even have a hint of sexual immorality.  If we are ever going to see this true in our lives it will only happen as we are passionately committed to live out Prov 5 and stand firm in 1 Corinthians 10.  Followers of Jesus, we need to confess our sins to one another, pray for one another, and bear one another’s burdens.  I know you are all in the thick of battle for your souls.  I am too.  I am praying for those in my church and I need your prayers too.

Please remember to pray for the Duggars, Tchividjians, and every family that is dealing with the fall out of this sin.

Pray for me as I pray for you today,

~Allen
